Adding, Removing, and Editing Links in Public Website WordPress

In the WordPress Edit page:

1. In the editor, highlight the text that you want to be the link text.
2. Click on the Insert/Edit Link tool in the toolbar.
   
3. Start typing in the name of the page you’d like to link to. WordPress will start searching through all of its content and display a list of possible options. When you see the correct page in the list, click on it. The URL will automatically appear in place of what you had typed.
   
   Note: This is actually a good quick-and-dirty “findability” test for your WordPress content. If it’s hard for you to find the page you want to link to using this method (or if you can’t tell the difference between very similarly named pages in the list), this may indicate that users searching the site or google could have a similar difficulty. It may be helpful to consider making some modification to the page titles on those pages to make them more obviously descriptive of what users will find there.
4. Click the Apply button. The text that you highlighted will now be a clickable link to the address you pasted in.
   

1. Navigate to the target page or asset in your browser. Copy the URL from the address bar in the browser.
   
2. In WordPress, highlight the text that you want to be link text in the editor.
3. Click on the Insert/Edit Link tool in the toolbar.
   
4. Paste in the URL that you copied in the first step.
5. Click the Apply button. The text that you highlighted will now be a clickable link to the address you pasted in.
   

1. In Sharespace BCIT Web Content, follow the instructions to find and copy the web address for the PDF or document you want to link to.
2. In WordPress, highlight the text that you want to be link text in the editor.
3. Click on the Insert/Edit Link tool in the toolbar.
   
4. Paste in the URL that you copied in the first step.
5. Click the Apply button. The text that you highlighted will now be a clickable link to the address you pasted in.
   

When linking to an email address, your link text should be either the email address itself or the name of the person to whom the address belongs.

1. In the content editing area in WordPress, highlight the text that will be linked (either an email address or name).
2. Click the Insert/edit link icon in the toolbar:
   
3. One of two things will happen:
   • If your link text is the (correctly formatted) email address: WordPress will have automatically identified it as an email address and the link tool will appear already pre-populated with the prefix “mailto:” followed by the email address (ex. mailto:xx@bcit.ca). Do not remove the “mailto:” prefix.
   • If your link text is something other than email address: The link tool will appear empty (as usual). Type in “mailto:” followed by the email address (ex. mailto:xx@bcit.ca).
4. Click the blue Apply arrow.
   

The text that you highlighted will now be a clickable link that opens a user’s email client so that they can send an email.

Use button links to make the one or two most important links on a page stand out from the rest.

1. In the content editing area in WordPress, click on a link you’ve already added to select it.
   
2. Click on the Formats drop-down in the toolbar.
3. Click on Button Styles and then BUTTON PRIMARY.
   Note: Only use BUTTON INVERTED if your text is, for some reason, on a dark background (as could occur in some panels).

Your link will now have a small box around it. It will show at its full size once you click somewhere else in the content editing window.

In the WordPress editor:

1. Click on the link you would like to remove or edit to select it.
   
2. To edit: Click the Edit icon next to the URL in the drop-down that appears, then follow any of the processes detailed in previous sections to choose the new link target.
   To remove: Click the Remove link icon next to the URL in the drop-down that appears. The text will lose its link formatting and will no longer be clickable.
