To help protect your information and improve cybersecurity at BCIT, we’re updating how accounts work for those who are both employees and students. Previously, one account could be used to access most services. Starting August 25, 2025, employee and student accounts will be kept separate. This change improves access management, better safeguards your data, and ensures each account only connects to the systems it’s intended for.
Why this change?
Separating employee and student accounts helps ensure the right access for each role while supporting BCIT’s cybersecurity efforts and improving the user experience.
How to identify your account
Role | Username Format | Email Address Format | |
---|---|---|---|
Employee | First Name + _ + Last Name e.g., jane_doe |
jane_doe@bcit.ca | |
or | Employee | First Initial + Last Name + Number e.g., jdoe12 |
jdoe12@bcit.ca |
Student | First Initial + Last Name + Number e.g., jdoe12 |
jdoe12@my.bcit.ca |
If you have multiple roles
Some people at BCIT may be both employees and students at the same time—or switch roles over time. If this applies to you, here’s how your accounts will be managed:
🧑🏫 You’re an Employee enrolling as a Student:
-
- You will receive a student account to access student-specific services like Learning Hub and lab systems.
- Your employee account will continue to be used for work-related systems.
🎓 You’re a Student hired as an Employee:
-
- You will receive a new employee account for work-related access such as SharePoint and BCIT email.
- Your student account will remain active for academic services.
🔄 If you’ve recently switched roles:
-
- You’ll retain both accounts. Access depends on the system you’re using.
- Always use the appropriate account for the role you’re acting in.
Systems Access: Employee vs Student Accounts
Depending on whether you’re using your employee or student account, you’ll have access to different systems and services.
If you have both accounts, be sure to sign in with the one that matches the system you’re trying to use.
