Accessing Azure Dev Tools for Students

In order to set up a subscription you need to have both a personal Microsoft account attached to a personal email address and an active @my.bcit.ca email address which you will use only to verify that you are a BCIT student.

If creating a new Microsoft account, do not use your @my.bcit.ca email address as this will not give you access to any products. Instead, use your personal email address (i.e., @hotmail.com, @gmail.com, @aol.com, etc.).

Azure Dev Tools for Teaching provides developer tools and learning resources designed to support students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs.

This program offers access for eligible academic students to a variety of applications – including Visio, Project, Microsoft Windows and Server operating systems, SQL Server, and more – along with $100 USD credit for Microsoft Azure cloud services.

Please note that Microsoft Office is not included in Azure Dev Tools for Teaching. For instructions on accessing and downloading Office 365 apps, see Downloading & Activating Microsoft Office 365 .

In your web browser:

Navigate to the Azure for students FAQ page
- Note: We recommend using an Incognito window to avoid automatically being logged in with your BCIT Microsoft account.
Click the Apply Now button.
Sign in with your existing personal Microsoft account or create a new one.
- Note: You must use a personal email account and will not be able to create an account using your @my.bcit.ca email account. The account you use must not be your BCIT educational account.
At the Academic Verification page enter your information.

- Note: You must enter your @my.bcit.ca under School email address. If you’re not sure what your @my.bcit.ca email address is, follow instructions to retrieve it.

Click the Verify Academic Status button. A notification banner will appear at the top of the page.
Check your @my.bcit.ca inbox for a message from Microsoft Vetting Services, then follow the link provided to complete the verification.
- Note: The verification process is generally quick, but during peak times, such as the start of term, it can take up to 1 business day for the email to arrive. Since BCIT cannot expedite this process, it’s recommended to claim your subscription a few days before your first class.

The steps below apply to any of the software available for download. We’ll use MS Project as an example:

Navigate to the Azure Dev Tools for Education site and sign in using your personal Microsoft account.
In the left-hand menu, click Software.
Use the Search field above the product names to filter the list of products. Type “Project” in the search bar and view the results.
Click on Project Professional 2021 – DVD. A new sidebar will appear at the right-hand side with a Download link and a Personal Product Key.
Click on View Key to generate a personal 25-digit key for this product

If a product is not listed, it is not available.

Personal product keys can only be used once per student. Multiple installations are not available. If a computer is lost, stolen, or damaged, reinstallation will require cancellation and reissue of the original key.

BCIT cannot provide additional keys. For key-related support, please contact Microsoft Customer Service through the Help function on the Microsoft Azure Portal toolbar.

Known issue: Extremely limited software list for some users

Problem: You are able to access Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching, but there are very few items in the software list (you do not see the items your classmates see).

Cause: The most likely explanation is that your student status has not been validated. Once your student status has been confirmed, your student eligibility will be recognized and there will be considerably more software accessible and available for download.
