Moving a computer and setting it up at a new location is a task that many employees are reluctant to attempt. However, there are only five major components that must be reconnected after a move:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Monitor
- Network
- Power Cord
Preparation
In preparation for a move, disconnect all of these components from the rear of the computer. The connections are color coded so there will be no confusion when reconnecting them. These components should all be kept with their respective computer for warranty purposes.
Submit a move request with the Distribution department to have your computer moved to it’s new location. The Distribution department is responsible for the moving of goods and equipment.
Setup after move
Once you have had your computer moved to its new location, follow the steps below, referring to the diagrams of the components, shown below, and of the computer back panel shown at the end of this article.
Component diagrams
Power cord
The power cord connects to the the back of the computer as shown in the diagram. It then connects to a standard power outlet in the wall.

Network cable
There are 2 options for connecting network cables. Most computers connect to the network jack in the wall via a Cisco phone. The phone has 3 ports on the backside. When viewed from the back, one network cable connects from the right jack on the back of the phone to the network jack on the back of the computer. Another cable connects from the center jack on the back of the phone to the network wall outlet.

If you do not have a Cisco phone, one network cable connects directly from the network jack on the back of the computer to the jack in the wall.
Note that the cable jack may have to be activated by IT Services if it has not been used lately.
