BCIT Issued Faculty/Staff Laptop – Initial Setup Guide

For faculty and staff who have received a new BCIT-issued laptop, here are the initial steps to set up your device. There are two scenarios for setup:

Setting up on a wired network connection (Ethernet) is the recommended option.
Setting up on WiFi.

For the most efficient and prompt setup experience, we advise completing the setup on a wired network connection.

Ensure your device is connected to an appropriate wired internet connection, and power on your device.
After checking for initial updates it will prompt for a logon. Login using your BCIT e-mail address and password.
If working from home, you may also get prompted for multi-factor authentication, complete the authentication request as normal.
Upon signing in, your device will initiate the setup process, typically requiring 15-20 minutes. You may notice your device restart during this process.
After your device is finished setting up, it will login directly to the desktop. Before continuing we recommend performing a reboot.

Power on the device and, follow the initial setup prompts.
First, select the country.
Select US as the keyboard layout, followed by skipping adding an additional layout or adding one of your preference.
Select your desired WiFi network,
– If on campus, use BCIT_Secure, connect using your BCIT e-mail and password.
– If working from home, connect to your home WiFi
You may get a prompt to continue connecting, click Connect and then Next once connected. Your device may take a couple minutes to check for updates at this point.
After checking for updates it will prompt for a logon. Login using your BCIT e-mail address and password.
If working from home, you may also get prompted for multi-factor authentication, complete the authentication request as normal.
After signing in your device will begin setup, this will generally take 15-20 minutes. You may notice your device restart during this process.
After your device is finished setting up, it will login directly to the desktop. Before continuing we recommend performing a reboot.

Once setup has been completed along with the reboot, you can then log-in and start using the laptop as normal. For the first 8-12 hours of using your computer, a few background tasks will be completed automatically including: installation of our anti-virus application and renaming of your computer from our placeholder to our standard naming convention.
