About Administrator rights on BCIT-issued devices

The removal of administrator rights helps ensure BCIT-issued devices comply with institutional policies and industry best practices for least privilege access. This change also supports the standardization of system settings, leading to a more consistent experience across managed devices and improved overall reliability. In addition to supporting compliance, removing administrator rights helps protect BCIT-issued devices against most malware by preventing attackers from making major changes to your system.

Before obtaining and using temporary administrator rights, please ensure that you are adhering to the following guidelines:

• Administrator rights MUST NOT be used to disable or modify security policies, firewall settings, or BCIT-installed antivirus configurations.
• When installing software:
  • Ensure that only essential software is installed in order to conduct BCIT business.
  • Only legal and licensed software is installed on your BCIT-issued device.

If you are unsure about any administrator task that you are trying to perform, please contact IT Services BEFORE obtaining temporary administrator rights.

NOTE: If a problem occurs as a result of a software installation or configuration change, IT Services may be required to revert your device to BCIT’s standard configuration.

Obtaining Administrator rights & installing software

1. Click on the Make Me Admin desktop shortcut.
2. Click on the Grant Me Administrator Rights button.
3. Select a reason from the list. If none apply, choose Other and enter a detailed reason for requesting administrator rights, and click OK.
   When using temporary administrator rights, your actions and the reason for requesting access may be logged and monitored by IT Services to support:
   • Security and compliance — ensuring activities follow BCIT policies.
   • Troubleshooting — helping IT identify and resolve issues.
   • Workflow improvements — streamlining future administrative processes.
4. A prompt will appear indicating that you are now a member of the Administrators group.
   Your administrator rights will be valid for 15 minutes.
5. Navigate to the software you want to install and double-click it.
6. If prompted, enter your usual BCIT credentials and click the Yes button.
7. Follow any additional steps to install the software.

After 15 minutes, your Administrator rights will expire and you will see the following prompt appear on screen.

Obtaining Administrator rights & installing software

1. Click on the Finder app.
2. In the left-hand menu, select Applications, then open the BCIT Self Service application.
   
3. Search for “Make Me Admin” using the search bar, then click the Run button on the Make Me Admin tile.
4. Enter a reason for requesting administrator rights and click OK.When using temporary administrator rights, your actions and the reason for requesting access may be logged and monitored by IT Services to support:

5. A prompt will appear indicating that you are now a member of the Administrators group.
   Your administrator rights will be valid for 15 minutes.
   Follow any additional steps to install the software. After 15 minutes your administrator rights will expire, and you will see a prompt appear on screen indicating that your Administrator rights have been removed.

Generally, most software titles do not require administrator rights to run; however, some older applications may still need them.

When software requires administrator rights, you will see a User Account Control prompt for credentials.

To launch the application as an administrator, follow these steps:

1. Close the User Account Control prompt.
2. Launch Make Me Admin, as shown in the Make Me Admin section above.
3. Launch the software. The User Account Control prompt will appear.
4. Enter your usual BCIT credentials (BCIT email address and password) and click the Yes button.

The software should launch properly.
