Frequently Asked Questions about Inactive email accounts on my.bcit.ca

BCIT Cyber Security Office has identified several dormant my.bcit.ca accounts that are vulnerable to compromise, such as being exploited to send spam and phishing emails. This poses a risk to the reputation of our student email system and to the Institute. To mitigate this, beginning January 1, 2025, we will restrict the ability to send and receive external emails for accounts that have been inactive for over 12 months. This measure helps protect BCIT from compromised accounts while keeping user accounts active, ensuring that registration and self-service functions remain unaffected.

  • Regular users: If you actively use your my.bcit.ca email account, no action is needed, and your account will remain unaffected.
  • Inactive users: If you haven’t accessed your my.bcit.ca email in the past 365 days, your account will be marked as inactive starting January 1, 2025. While you’ll no longer be able to send or receive emails from external (non-BCIT) addresses, you will still be able to register for courses through www.bcit.ca and access self-service functions.
