Connecting to BCIT Secure and eduroam Wireless Networks

These are instructions for setting up your Windows 10/11 device to connect to the BCIT_Secure or eduroam wireless network. These instructions and screenshots may differ from previous, future and manufacturer region specific versions of Windows.

These instructions are provided as is; IT Services is not able to support troubleshooting of personal devices.

1. Select the Wi-Fi symbol in the lower right hand corner of your computer.
2. Select BCIT_Secure or eduroam.
3. Check Connect Automatically and select Connect.
4. If you receive a prompt to continue connecting, select Connect. (This may happen multiple times, repeat as necessary)
5. Enter your login information and click OK.
   • If you are BCIT faculty, staff, or student and you’re connecting to BCIT Secure or eduroam this will be your usual BCIT credentials (your myBCIT/BCIT email address and password).
   • If you are a visiting from another institution and your institution is a part of eduroam this will be your normal login credentials. If your institution is not a part of eduroam and you require guest access, a BCIT Faculty member can provide guest wireless access.

These are instructions for setting up your MacOS device to connect to the BCIT_Secure or eduroam wireless network. These instructions and screenshots may differ from previous, future and manufacturer region specific versions of MacOS.

These instructions are provided as is; IT Services is not able to support troubleshooting of personal devices.

1. Click on the Wi-Fi symbol to show a list of available wireless networks.
2. Select BCIT_Secure or eduroam.
3. Enter your login information and click Join.
   • If you are BCIT faculty, staff, or student and you’re connecting to BCIT Secure or eduroam this will be your usual BCIT credentials (your myBCIT/BCIT email address and password).
   • If you are a visiting from another institution and your institution is a part of eduroam this will be your normal login credentials. If your institution is not a part of eduroam and you require guest access, a BCIT Faculty member can provide guest wireless access.
4. Click Continue to accept the certificate.
5. Enter your laptop username and password to accept the changes.

Your computer will now be configured to automatically connect to the BCIT_Secure or eduroam wireless network while at BCIT.

These are instructions for setting up your Android device to connect to the BCIT_Secure or eduroam wireless network. These instructions and screenshots may differ from previous, future and manufacturer specific versions (HTC Sense, Samsung Touchwiz, etc.) of Android.

These instructions are provided as is; IT Services is not able to support troubleshooting of personal devices.

On your Android phone or tablet:

1. Open Settings.
   
2. Open the Connections settings (this may be named Wireless and Networks or something similar).
   
3. Select the Wi-Fi option (this may be under Wireless and Networks).
   
4. Select BCIT_Secure or eduroam from the list of wireless networks.
   
5. Change the following options:
   1. Change the EAP Method to “PEAP”
   2. Change Phase 2 Authentication to MSCHAPV2.
   3. Change the CA certificate to “Use system certificates”
   4. For Domain enter “securewifi.bcit.ca”
6. Enter your login information in the Identity and Password fields.
   • If you are BCIT faculty, staff, or student and you’re connecting to BCIT Secure or eduroam this will be your usual BCIT credentials (your myBCIT/BCIT email address and password).
   • If you are a visiting from another institution and your institution is a part of eduroam this will be your normal login credentials. If your institution is not a part of eduroam and you require guest access, a BCIT Faculty member can provide guest wireless access.
   • Note for BCIT Secure: If your connecting to BCIT Secure your device may require a field labeled as domain to be filled, enter securewifi.bcit.ca into the field.

1. Tap the Connect button and your device will now be configured to automatically connect to the BCIT_Secure or eduroam wireless network while at BCIT.
   

These are instructions for setting up your iOS device to connect to the BCIT_Secure wireless or eduroam network. These instructions and screenshots may differ from previous, future and manufacturer region specific versions of iOS.

1. Select the settings icon on your iPad, iPod or iPhone.
2. Select the Wi-Fi menu option.
3. Select BCIT_Secure or eduroam from the list of wireless networks.
4. Enter your login information, then click Join.
   • If you are BCIT faculty, staff, or student and you’re connecting to BCIT Secure or eduroam this will be your usual BCIT credentials (your myBCIT/BCIT email address and password).
   • If you are a visiting from another institution and your institution is a part of eduroam this will be your normal login credentials. If your institution is not a part of eduroam and you require guest access, a BCIT Faculty member can provide guest wireless access.
5. Select Trust on the certificate window.
6. Your device will now be configured to automatically connect to the BCIT_Secure or eduroam wireless network while at BCIT.

Due to the amount of console manufacturers and types we cannot cover all the systems in depth and this is not a comprehensive or specific guide. Also due to the currently configured authentication methods in use by BCIT to provide secure Wifi and Wired connectivity, console compatibility varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Student Housing

If your a student living on campus and are trying to connect a gaming console to the wifi or wired network please refer to the information below:

• For wireless (wifi) connectivity:
  • BCIT’s wifi networks can currently only be used by providing BCIT credentials (username and password) – otherwise known as 802.1x.
  • Most mainstream gaming consoles only support pre-shared key (password) authentication – otherwise known as WAP2/PSK – this will typically be what you use at home to connect to your home wifi network. Due to this limitation most gaming consoles will not properly connected to our wifi networks.

We recommend using a wired connection when living on campus, please see the below of information and tips on how to connect multiple wired devices to the network. If you wish to attempt to connect your console to the wifi, please consult the manufactures website or technical forums for information and instructions for connecting to wifi in an 802.1x environment.

• For wired connectivity:
  • BCIT provides a single 100/10Mb wired connection to each room. The most common method of connecting multiple devices to the wired network is to purchase and configure a personal router (purchasable from Bestbuy and Amazon, etc) and configuring it to use PPPOE (by following the KB article below) and using the wired ports on the router to connect various devices.

BCIT currently provides wired connectivity to Student Housing using:

• Point-to-Point Over Ethernet (PPPOE)
  • For additional information on PPPOE and general guide on how to connect your router or windows device please see this knowledge base article.

To connect your console to the wired network using PPPOE you will need to determine if your console supports these protocols. The best way to determine and configure your console – if the of the manufacture supports those protocols, is to consult the manufacturers technical specifications or technical forums.

Due to the amount of manufacturers and types we cannot cover all the systems in depth and this is not a comprehensive or specific guide. Also due to the currently configured authentication methods in use by BCIT to provide secure Wifi and Wired connectivity, Smart/IOT device compatibility varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

IoT and Smart Devices

If you are a Staff or Faculty member and you would like to connected an IoT or Smart device (3d printers, Smart lights, etc), please consider the following:

• BCIT’s wifi networks currently can only be connected to by providing valid BCIT credentials (username and password) – otherwise known as 802.1x.
• Most mainstream IoT and smart devices only support pre-shard key (password) authentication – otherwise known as WAP2/PSK – this will typically be what you use at home to connect to your home wifi network. Due to this limitation most IoT and smart devices will not properly connected to our wifi networks.

For these reasons, If you are considering purchasing or using an IoT or Smart device for instructional or operational purposes, we strongly suggest reaching out to IT Services prior to purchasing. Once the request has been received we will determine if the request and device are compliant with our Cybersecurity standards.

Please Note: While IT Services can assist in connecting an IoT or Smart device to our wifi network, we are not responsible for troubleshooting, supporting or maintaining the device. Those are the sole responsibility of the user and their department.
