About changes to @my.bcit.ca email for BCIT Employees

This transition aligns student email with BCIT’s Microsoft 365 environment, improving reliability, security, and long-term support while reducing reliance on aging on-premises infrastructure. It also simplifies day-to-day email use for faculty and staff by eliminating the need to manage separate addresses. As part of this change, addresses will be clearly distinguished based on role.

• Employee Email (@bcit.ca) will remain the official address for all work-related communication.
• Student Email (@my.bcit.ca) is reserved for student use.

On November 15, 2026:

• Your @my.bcit.ca email address will become read-only.
• You will not be able to send or receive email from this address.
• Email forwarding from @my.bcit.ca will stop.
• Messages sent to this address will not be delivered and may result in a bounce-back to the sender.

On March 31, 2027:

• Unless you are an active student, your @my.bcit.ca email address will be retired.
• All emails, attachments, contacts, and other data will be deleted.
• This data cannot be recovered. 

The following will remain unchanged:

• You will continue to have access to your employee email (@bcit.ca) address.
• If you are an active student (currently in a course or have taken a course within the last 24 months), you will retain your @my.bcit.ca student email address for student related activity.

To help ensure a smooth transition, please review and complete the following steps:

• Move or save any content or data you want to keep from your @my.bcit.ca mailbox.
• Update any documents, systems, and materials that list your @my.bcit.ca email address as your contact information.
• Ensure your @bcit.ca email address is the one you use for your BCIT work.
• Consider adding an auto-reply to your @my.bcit.ca email address to notify senders of new contact information.

Any emails, attachments, contacts, or other data remaining in your @my.bcit.ca mailbox after March 31, 2027, will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered under any circumstances

Consider where you use your @my.bcit.ca email address and update your information before November 15, 2026:

• Do you have any subscriptions tied to your @my.bcit.ca email address? 
• Do you have external contacts who use your @my.bcit.ca email address to communicate with you? 
• Do you have logins tied to your @my.bcit.ca email address? 
• Do you have automated alerts sent to your @my.bcit.ca email address? 

After November 15, 2026, you won’t be able to receive verification emails sent to this address to confirm account changes or updates. Update any accounts before November 15, 2026. BCIT will not be able to retrieve missed messages. 

No. Faculty and Staff will continue to use their employee email (@bcit.ca) address. There is no change to employee email as part of this transition.

Following the migration, Faculty and Staff will no longer have a student email (@my.bcit.ca) address, as this address is reserved for student use.

Employee email (@bcit.ca) access does not change. Log in to your email with your usual BCIT email and password.

You can export all emails from your my.bcit.ca account before it is removed. For instructions, refer to the article: Exporting Content from your @my.bcit.ca Email Account

If you are a BCIT Employee and later enroll in courses as a Student, upon enrolment you will be assigned a student email (@my.bcit.ca) address. You will then have a separate email address for employee and student; each used for different purposes.

In this scenario:

• Your employee address (@bcit.ca) is used for work-related systems and communication.
• Your student address (@my.bcit.ca) is used for student specific systems and services.
• Both addresses remain active, and you use the address associated with the role you are performing (employee or student).

If you are both an Employee and a Student, always sign in using the account that matches the role you are performing at the time. For more details, refer to Using the right BCIT account: If you are an Employee and a Student.

For example, if your student email was jdoe123@my.bcit.ca, that address may be removed as part of this project while you are an employee, and you will use only your @bcit.ca employee email. If you enroll as a student again in the future, your original student email address (jdoe123@my.bcit.ca) will be reactivated.

This is because the “jdoe123” portion of your email is a unique identifier, which is generated and maintained in Banner (BCIT’s student information system). This identifier remains the same over time unless there is a legal name change.

Starting November 15, 2026, instructors will be using their @bcit.ca email address instead of @my.bcit.ca in Learning Hub. More information about how this change will affect processes and the user experience will be shared in the coming months.
