How to keep your BCIT computer secure with updates
Microsoft routinely releases security and critical patches for Windows. ITS uses Software Center to deploy these updates to your BCIT-asseted computer.
To ensure that all updates are applied to your computer you must reboot when prompted. Choosing to defer the reboot will leave your computer at risk. After a period of inactivity Windows may reboot your computer.
Updating from the Windows Notification:
Once an update is available a notification will pop-up on your screen saying a software change is required.
- If you wish to install the update when prompted click on the pop-up.
- If you would like to manually control when these updates are installed click on the pop-up and configure the settings.
- If you don’t do anything, this update will be installed automatically after 7 days.
Note: if you missed the pop-up notification, please refer to the “Updating from Software Center” section below.
Updating from software center:
If you missed the notification pop-up, your next option is to install the updates through Software Center. This will provide you with a summary of updates you can install. If the Updates section is empty there are currently no updates available for your device.
- From the Windows Start menu, type Software Center, and then click on Software Center in the match result.
- From Software Center, click on the Updates tab. New Microsoft updates will show on the right pane.
- Click Install All to proceed with the installation.
